About Us

Churches Together in Melton Mowbray was formed by Christians wanting to work together to share the good news about Jesus. Following the demise of the Council of Churches during the 1970s, a group of Christians from different churches in the town continued to meet together. Calling themselves Melton Christian Fellowship, they discussed their similarities and differences and shared ideas for working together.

This led to an Ecumenical Day on June 14th 1980, which was attended by 28 people from the Anglican, Methodist, Baptist and Pentecostal churches and led by Rev David Patterson of the Loughborough Ecumenical Parish. Those present agreed to take proposals back to their own churches and  meet again later that year, with each church providing a representative to join the group.

In September, a decision was taken to join together at Christmas to sing carols in the Market Place and, the following year, to have a united service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in St Mary's Parish Church. On February 5th 1981, with the encouragement of Rev Stanley Withers, the first Constitution of the new Melton Mowbray Council of Churches was agreed and, on 2nd April that same year, an inaugural meeting for clergy and lay members took place. The aim was to work and pray for Christian unity and serve the community of Melton Mowbray together.

Events arranged during the year included services in each other's churches during Holy Week, a Walk of Witness and service in the Market Place on Good Friday, and Carol Singing in the Market Place every Christmas. In recent years, lunches and ecumenical discussion groups have been arranged during Lent and, for several years, a united outdoor service was held at the New Park bandstand. Over the years Churches Together in Melton Mowbray has also established a number of groups, to serve the local community. These include:
